Seasonal Manager, Nairn Museum

 

Nairn Museum, situated in Viewfield, maintains and displays a unique collection of artefacts and archives relating to Nairn and the former county of Nairnshire. It comprises 6 exhibition rooms each with its own specific themes. The Isabel Rae library is used for temporary exhibitions highlighting the extensive collections. A newly refurbished Family History room was added in 2020, containing censuses and other source material for those wishing to explore their ancestry.

Nairn Museum is usually open from early April till late October, Monday to Friday 10 – 4:30 and Saturday 10 – 1. It is run by Nairn Museum Ltd., with a Board of Directors and supported by a large group of volunteers. It is a charity limited by guarantee and dependent upon entry charges, a group of Friends, a small retail outlet, donations and a small annual grant from Highland Council.

 

The seasonal manager would be employed by Nairn Museum Ltd. from the date of appointment to the end of October. The principal task will be to ensure the Museum is open to the public during the stated hours.


The main duties, in addition to maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and volunteers, would be ...

 

·        * To open and close on 4 days of the week (Monday to Wednesday, plus Friday)

·        * To ensure there are sufficient volunteers on duty each day

·        * To contact volunteers on the supply list when needed

·        * To respond to telephone calls, emails and requests via social media

·        * To maintain the website and Facebook page, updating each regularly

·        * To ensure the fire alarm system is checked each week

·        * To report to the Board monthly

·        * To ensure compliance with all the policies and guidelines

·        * To pass bills to the treasurer promptly

·        * To ensure there is sufficient change in the till and report to treasurer when change needed

·        * To consider ways to fundraise

·        * To keep an accurate timesheet

Salary

£13 an hour based on a 26 ½ hour week. Hours 9:30 – 5 with 1 hour for lunch.

Holiday entitlement: 3 days, to be reviewed

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual, preferably with an interest in local history, who can provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our visitors and volunteers. You will be expected to open and close on the allotted days and ensure there are always 2 volunteers on duty in reception, contacting those on the supply list when there are absences.

You should have good PC skills and a working knowledge of how to maintain a website. The office has an iMac computer.

You should have good communication skills, whether in person or via the telephone. Enquiries for the Family History facility should be passed to a Board member.

Keeping an accurate timesheet will ensure any hours worked outside the contract e.g. Board meetings, coffee morning, can be remunerated or taken as days in lieu.

During any emergency you will be expected to respond in a professional manner and seek help from Board members when required.

Knowledge of the Museum’s policies and guidelines and the health and safety policy will ensure everyone’s health and wellbeing are secure.
